Display - Samsung SDI to Cut PDP Module Price, Up Panel Capacity
November 29, 2004
Aiming to stimulate the PDP (Plasma Display Panel) TV market, starting in 2005, Samsung SDI will be lowering the prices of its 42" PDP modules by around 40% to US$700, while the number of components used in the PDP modules will be halved to between 800 and 900 units. After the adjustments, the Korean panel maker says it will be able to produce one PDP module per ten seconds, curtailing production time by 30%.

Samsung SDI's third PDP production line is slated to see completion in December. According to the plan, it will be operational in the beginning of 2005 and start mass-producing by the third quarter of 2005, reaching a monthly capacity of 130,000 units, when averaged out to 42" panels. The line is designed to cut out four or six 42" PDPs from each glass substrate. Adoption of the technology to sever six 42" panels from one substrate will begin in the second half of 2005. The company's total monthly capacity will amount to 250,000 units after the new plant joins in.
